Now that you have a winner’s ribbon from the local fair, should you be concerned that someone might want to steal your quilt? Or have you ever wondered how much you should insure Granny’s quilt for or what the replacement cost would be of your recent masterpiece? Would you want either of these quilts replaced if something happened to them? Perhaps it is time to consult a certified appraiser of quilted textiles! Learning what a quilted textile is worth for insurance purposes or market value does not happen in the same manner as it does on a certain popular television show. Getting a quilted textile appraised requires an examination of the item on the spot, and perhaps follow-up research.
Karen Dever, a certified appraiser with AQS and a member of the Professional Association of Appraisers - Quilted Textiles (PAAQT), will be on hand during the show to appraise quilts, answer questions about quilt valuation, advice on quilt care and admire the hand work of quilters known and unknown. Karen can provide a written insurance appraisal for $50 each or an oral consultation for $30. Written appraisals are necessary for insurance coverage of antique, vintage and new quilted textiles. Unless you are able to prove otherwise, the insurance claim for a "blanket" is far below what our quilts are generally worth. Quilters are encouraged to protect their investments by having their collections appraised. Walk-ins are welcome at the “Appraiser’s Table” if there are times available -- just ask for directions to the space reserved for quilt appraisals. Appraisals can be completed on new and old quilts, both traditional and nontraditional, and quilted garments. To book an appointment contact: Jody Bitzel- firstname.lastname@example.org, subject: BVQ Quilt Show appraisal; or phone me @ (610)500-4826. Appraisals will be done 10:00am-3:30pm on Saturday and 10:00am-3:30pm on Sunday.
