Thank you for the quilts and pillowcases collected this month.
Donated this month:
o 46 quilts were donated to The New Castle County Hope Center Inc, a 501c3 organization in Wilmington.
o 8 quilts were donated to Penn Hospice.
o 40 pillowcases were dropped off at Hayes Sewing for Ryan's Cases for Smiles.
The Hope Center opened originally to house and support individuals and families experiencing homelessness during Covid. It has grown from offering shelter to being a life-changing hub of vital resources and social support for those experiencing homelessness. They operate on a referral basis, offering behavioral health services, assistance with obtaining benefits, such as SNAP food, child care, after school programming, and workforce development, among other things. They also focus on homeless veterans and on short term housing for refugees, currently from Ukraine (through partnership with Jewish Family Services). They have also housed flood victims from Hurricane Ida and households displaced from an emergency building condemnation. They have 168 rooms that can be occupied and for most of 2021 and 2022, their occupancy hovered over 80 percent. This equates to a daily occupancy of 400 people, half of which were children under the age of 18.

You’ve seen the quilt - now meet the TEAM!
In March 2018 the raffle quilt, "A Brandywine Quilter’s Mandala" was unveiled. What happened in the year between that fateful recruitment at retreat in 2017 and the unveiling? Who are the behind the scene artisans who created it? The quilt was specifically designed to be made by a team, even though the final appliqueing of pieces had to be done by one person. The design consists of 10 “rounds” containing eight pieces each, a center, and the border pieces. All the pieces in each round are identical and created from the one pattern piece per round. All rounds, except the innermost batik round, were layered and overlapped to cover the places where each piece met its neighbor. This gave “wiggle room” to conceal and accommodate any variations in size and placement of the pieces. (Thus avoiding the frequent group quilt problem of assembling many 12 inch squares ranging in size from 11.5” to 13”!) Each member of the team was assigned their own “round”, ensuring that all the blocks in each round would be consistent. The call for raffle quilt volunteers produced a wonderful team who immediately got busy creating all the pieces of the mandala.
MEET the TEAM!
Look at the photo below of the raffle quilt. Start by counting the dark green outermost “leaves” as Round 1. AMP LYONS and MARY JANE GOODMAN worked together on the paper piecing of those leaves and on the light green leaves in round 8. Next, our “perfect piecer”, LIL KOSTER, sewed the all the tiny 1” squares of blue into pieced fabric for the radiant blue “petals” of Round 2. BOBBIE SPAID worked on the decorative stitches in the little coral scallops in rounds 3 and 10. SANDY POWELL and ANNA WADE bravely learned the Karen Kay Buckley method of applique to do the yellow pieces, SANDY doing the golden yellow round 4 that has horizontal quilting and ANNA doing the inner light yellow round 7 with the vertical rays of quilting. KATY HOESS filled in with the big focus fabric petals and simple little leaves in rounds 5 and 6. CHRIS SCHUCK stood by ready to make a border full of appliqued leaves but was spared by a last minute change in design. And TERRY LIEBERMAN'S gorgeous quilting made it all look like a mandala! A huge THANK YOU to our team!

Carole Lyles Shaw
modern quilter, author, and teacher
GUEST FEE $5.00 Click HERE to purchase
Carole currently makes her home in Florida. She is a self-taught quilter who works in series. She has a minimalist approach and enjoys working with African prints. By playing with scale and curved piecing she has created some novel and interesting prize-winning projects. Carole’s philosophy is to “play” with your quilting to discover what YOU like! Start without an end in sign and work to the end. By identifying what you love, you can build your own palette and manage your fabric buying with a focus. Carole will be sharing her talents with our virtual trunk show and her delightful insights.
BVQ will have an opportunity to join Carole for one of her new workshops to be scheduled in April. Registrations will open in January
