BVQ Sew-In February 2020
This year we had as Special Guest: Gretchen Ginnerty, President Love Quilt Project, www.lovequiltproject.org
This year we had a special opportunity to participate in the Love Quilt Project. The LQP President Gretchen Ginnerty stopped by to talk about their project and how it has evolved with participation on both sides of the globe! We had special art quilt blocks, a pattern and instructions to complete a quilt at our Sew-In!! It was fun and productive in support of an innovative organization.

BVQ 2019 Challenge
The Preemie Quilt Challenge goal was 100 quilts for a NICU. WE SURPASSED THAT GOAL AND DONATED 215 PREMIE QUILTS!
The quilts were delivered to NICUs at The Chester County Hospital, The children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Jefferson. Thank you BVQ members, members of Calico Cutters Quilt Guild and friends who participated in this worthy endeavor!

BVQ Annual Sew -in August 2019
BVQ's Annual Sew-In was changed from our traditional February date to August of this year. On August 13, 2019, we had a fun day working on Charity projects, little dresses for Nicaragua, finishing up our Premie Quilts, and working on our own projects. The total number of Premiw=e Quilts contributed by BVQ, members of Calico Cutters Quilt Guild and other friends was revealed - 207! We learned some new techniques thanks to Julia Penna and Bobbie Spaid. Julia shared with us her technique for curved piecing which may take the fear out of trying it for ourselves. Bobbie shared a nice idea for placing a "fabric Quilt Story" on the back of a quilt as the label. We enjoyed a pizza dinner and a nice day of camaraderie. See the pictures below.
In May 2019, BVQ was offered a workshop by Joan Radell of Bucklebee Bags. Joan had a workshop on the thoughtfully designed Bucklebee Charming Handbag - a slim, structured, and deceptively spacious handbag. It's a perfect first bag; easy and quick to construct. Charming is 8” tall, 10” wide, and 4” deep at the base, and can be worn as a cross-body or shoulder bag. The interior features Bucklebee's signature large zipper pocket and two flat pockets to keep your essentials close at hand. Charming is the perfect bag for a lunch date, an afternoon of shopping, and makes a welcome gift.

In April 2019 Nancy Arico treated BVQ Members to a workshop on "Interleave Quilts".
Interleave quilts are pieced using a quilt-as-you-go technique in which thin strips of fabric are sewn to batting and backing. The interleave design results from cutting these strips from two panels of fabric and piecing alternate strips from each panel. For added interest, strips May be joined in a wave pattern. The result of this process is a complex-looking quilt that can be pieced quickly from thin strips sewn in straight lines.

They went to the Neighbors of Nicaragua project via Jody Bitzel who also made additional dresses as well as Betty Jean Boyd. We gave over 20 dresses to this group. They very much appreciated this donation and would love to have more. Many thanks to the Guild for doing this project.

Reversible Quilt-as-You-Go Placemat Workshop
Saturday, June 23, 2018 10am to 3pm
...a free workshop sponsored by Brandywine Valley Quilt Guild
In this workshop we created a placemat that is good for two occasions, since both sides are completely different even though sewn together at the same time. The project was quilt-as-you-go and we also learned how to create a two color binding.

BVQ 2017 Retreat at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville, PA
Well, BVQ 2017 Retreat is in the books. Waiting anxiously till next year!! We packed, we unpacked, we sewed, we ate, we laughed, we ate, we learned, we ate, we played, we ate, we slept (well, some of us), we ate, we packed, and as of today (1 day home) I’ll bet many have not unpacked. But there’s always tomorrow!
We not only learned new quilting things (easy 4-patch, hexi flowers, flange binding, binding and other tricks, facing a quilt) we learned OTHER things – none of us need denture cream, one of us has been a balloon-delivering clown, some of us have NEVER had a cup of coffee, one of us was part of a Presidential motorcade, one of us has a personal picture with President Obama, one of us cleaned a toilet with someone’s toothbrush (don’t cross this person!), one of us speaks 4 languages, one of us is a marathon runner, one of us has written a dictionary that is currently in bookstores, and NONE OF US can agree on what a Tastee Cake is….you just had to be there.
Enjoy the slide show – until next year. Come again! Or join us for the first time. You won’t be sorry!
BVQ Celebrated the 2016 Holiday Season in Style - Good Food, Great Desserts, Lots of Gifts, and Camaraderie
BVQ 2016 Quilt Challenge
In keeping with our 2016 quilt show theme “Quilting - A Novel Idea” members were invited to unleash their creative energy, using a favorite book as inspiration. The challenge was to create a small quilt depicting some aspect of the book. The rules were simple:
1) Quilt must be based on a book of your choosing – any book is fine (Adult or children’s).
2) Design a quilt that expresses the title, a character, a favorite scene, etc. from the book.
3) Quilts should be between 72” and 96” perimeter (i.e. 18” x 18”, 20” x 16”, up to 24”x24”).
4) Include a label on the back with Your Name, The Name of the Quilt, and The Name of the Book that inspired it.
5) Keep it private! Don’t share your idea, book title, or quilt with anyone who will be at the August meeting to vote.
6) Only the front will be displayed for voting.
Quilts were displayed and voted on at the August 2016 meeting.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS AND THANKS TO ALL PARTICIPANTS!!!

New Member Tea 2015
|
New members and “old” enjoyed great food and fellowship at our New Member Tea at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2nd, 2015.
The Tea was held at the Simpson House in Chester Springs, PA. This lovely tea room has a large private room, easily able to accommodate our group. We each had our individual pot of tea from their entire selection and a wonderful tasty assortment of five tea sandwiches, as well as petite scones and all the trimmings beginning with a side salad! And... dessert! Jody Bitzel coordinated a most enjoyable event, which included a fun activity to help us get to know each other better. Thank you, Jody! |
BVQ Retreat 2015
Over 30 BVQ members attended the 2015 BVQ Retreat at the Black Rock Retreat Center in Quarryville, PA, from Thursday, April 16 to Sunday, April 19, 2015.
It was a huge success! It combined the very best of BVQ – ART (such creativity!), PHILANTHROPY (charity quilts) and FELLOWSHIP. And then there was the FUN! Thanks to Ellen’s thorough planning and effective negotiating, we had the use of the Cedar and Pine workrooms on the lower level of the main building. We sewed, learned new techniques and of course, dined, snacked and socialized. Once again, we enjoyed the Saturday evening ice cream social and “strip poker” game, when hilarity abounded! Many thanks again to Ellen Nobles-Harris and Julia Penna for coordinating this fun and productive get-away. |
