The quilts will be used to cover the incubator of a preemie baby to block the bright lights. The preemie baby will then take the quilt home with them when leaving the hospital.
Guidelines:
The quilts will be used to cover the incubator of a preemie baby to block the bright lights. The preemie baby will then take the quilt home with them when leaving the hospital.
Guidelines:
- The quilt should measure 36 x 36" square. The top should be pieced, and the binding can be done any way you choose. Please use fabric on the top suitable for a baby and the back should be a solid piece of fabric.
- All fabric should be cotton, no metallic fabric, no embellishments.
- Use cotton batting.
- Do not use monofilament thread or tie the quilts. No rag quilts for this please.
- Challenges happen throughout the year. During these challenges, quilts can be turned in for a chance to win a gift card. Each quilt you turn in qualifies you for a chance for a $25 gift card. There will be 4 drawings. And you can only win once. The drawing will be held at a designated meeting, you do not need to be there to win.
- We have a special label available for these quilts, available at the guild meetings.
Scent Hearts for NICU Babies
"Scent" hearts are made of two pieces of flannel, sewn together with no batting. The flannel should be pre-washed in unscented detergent before cutting them out. These should be donated by only by those in smoke free, pet free homes. The hearts are given to NICU parents to wear next to their skin, absorbing their scents. They are then placed next to the infant where they can be soothed by their parent's scent and aid in bonding, even when a parent cannot be at the bedside. They are provided in sets of two to allow the hearts to be switched out as needed.
You can find the pattern and template here for a 5" finished heart: Heart Pattern
We will continue to collect these at each meeting. Thanks in advance for anyone interested in making some!

Ryans's Case for Smiles
Ryan's Case for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer) was inspired by Ryan Kerr, who at the age of 12 began a 6 year battle with cancer....Each year 44,000 children across North America are treated for cancer while thousands more experience life-changing illnesses and injuries. A hospital stay is a frightening experience for adults, and even more so for young children. Beyond the obvious medical fears and difficulties, a sterile hospital room lacks the comfort and warmth of home.
BVQ makes pillowcases which are donated to Ryan's Case for Smiles who distributes them to hospitals for their young patients with serious or terminal illnesses. See pillowcase instructions and make one or more pillowcases in bright, cheerful fabrics, or pick up a kit at any BVQ Guild meeting. Please wash and dry each pillowcase, place it in a clean Ziploc bag and bring it to any BVQ meeting.

Love Quilt Project
Reach out to Elaine O'Connell before the meeting if you would like to work on sewing the blocks for the Love Quilt Project. We do still have several kits.
We have volunteered for several years with a non-profit organization headquartered in Arlington, Va called
The Love Quilt Project. This project coordinates school children here in the US, quilters such as us, and other partners to provide Love Quilts to orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa. These quilts are often the only thing these children can call their own and the gifts show them they are loved and can truly change their lives. The Love Quilt Project supplies all the completed art squares (from children here in the US), one logo square, and the log cabin pattern. We select our own fabric to best carry these messages to the children. The quilts will be presented to boys and girls of all ages – infants to teens.
The pattern is here. It is essentially log cabin blocks, with the children's art in the center; the blocks are laid out 3 across and 4 blocks down. The bottom right corner block has the Love Quilt Project logo. Once sewn together, the final quilt will be professionally finished by a partner - Springs Creative who will be using specially chosen Love Quilt fabrics to complete the back of the quilt, the fire-retardant batting is supplied by a partner from the Milliken Group. Springs Creative will top stitch the completed Love Quilt top.
