President's Message June 2021

It seems to me that pretty early on in life we are set to a rhythm where we see summer as a time for rest, for slowing down, for re-energizing a depleted spirit. I don’t know about you, but that is certainly what I am ready for as we enter this season. Although the last 15 months have provided plenty of time for solitude there was always a gnawing anxiety about COVID-19 and what the future would look like that never quite went away. And now, it is so exciting that we seem to be emerging out of some restrictions. It was wonderful to see so many members, without a mask on, at the last Neumann gathering. In the spirit of slowing down for summer tho, we will not meet at Neumann in June or July and our regular meetings will continue on ZOOM. We are planning to do an in person outdoor event at Neumann for our Annual August Ice Cream Social. Then, although this is not 100% confirmed, it seems likely we will be able to meet in person, inside, at our new meeting location at Neumann. My hope is we will be doing some sort of hybrid meeting with ZOOM and in person to the extent we can going forward–we just need to work out the technology. On June 3rd there is a board meeting on ZOOM, if you would like to attend just let me know and I will get you the link. On June 8th, at the regular meeting we will be voting for new board members. As we look to the future, I ask each of you to consider how you can help with the guild. There are opportunities big and small with committees and the 2022 Quilt Show. If you are interested in serving a term on the board in 2022, please reach out to any board member. We welcome anyone interested in supporting or shadowing a board position.  We do have a workshop coming up in June, we would love to see you there! See you on the 8th. Keep on quilting, keep on creating, keep on adding your beauty to this world!

BVQ is at it again! Many members met at our May Charity drop off/pick up afternoon at Neumann. 34 pillowcases for Ryan’s Cases for Smile and 30 finished quilts were collected.  Special recognition goes out to Lee Hickman who finished several quilts this month, all new designs and lots of color.  She is featured in some of the pictures above.
Organizations we have continue to focus on this year have included Young Moms (Chester County), Ryan’s Cases for Smiles, Lutheran Community Services (New Castle County), Chester County Hospice (especially veterans), The Hickman, Quilts of Valor, and Chester County Family Academy.  Jeanne Phillips and Selina Faulkner took a large load of quilts to Young Moms this past week and they were so appreciative.

President's Message May 2021

Happy May!
As we enter May the TV commercials are all about Mother’s Day. A day probably created by Hallmark to sell cards, but that does not make it a bad idea. We all deserve a special day! I know this day can mean a lot of things to different people, but this year I am remembering all the women in BVQ: mothers, grandmothers, daughters, aunts, nieces, mentors, and friends who make a difference every day in the lives of their loved ones. In addition, you are all QUILTERS. No matter what other titles you carry in life, that one tells us you are a maker and creator of beauty! Oh, and you are generous, with your time and your talent. We continue to have a tremendous response to our charity efforts. A great team of member volunteers who offered to help cut and assemble kits will meet twice before our next Neumann pick up for those ready to sew. I am so impressed with what you have made this year, but especially for the UFOs that have been finished – or at least advanced towards completion. We will continue to do our virtual show and tell at the meeting so be sure to send your pictures to Linda Miller. Also, check out our “Back to Basics” on our Saturday sew-ins starting this month and watch for other member to member education opportunities coming up. See you on the 11th. Keep on quilting, keep on creating, keep on adding beauty to this world! Nancy

Hi I'm Deb, BVQ webmaster and official blog runner! I am a retired Medical Technologist,  having worked the night shift at Chester County Hospital for 30 years. I think I have sewed forever – my mom sewed, my grandmother sewed, and in 1984 I decided to make a "blanket" for my about-to-be baby....it was 3 layers sewn together with a binding!  Little did I know it was a quilt!  I am basically self-taught, but continue to learn as I hang out with BVQ.  My basement work area is seriously quilt cluttered and my better half asks no questions!  I have too many UFO’s and want-to-do’s than I can count, but I guess that makes me a true quilter!
